The situation in France is the following:

  • In 1999 the Superior Council of Hygiene Publique de France (CSHPF) gave a negative opinion for the use of stevia and its derivatives in food, following the decisions of the European Commission and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in USA in 1999.
  • As for the other two organizations, CSHPF gave the explanation for this decision on lack of scientific data on the safety of the plant and products from them.
  • Since then silence.
  • In June 2006, STEVIA NATURA Greensweet files a request for placing on the market steviol glycosides as a food additive to the DGGCRF (Direction Générale de la Concurrence de la Consommation et de la Repression des Fraudes), an agency under the Ministry of Economy Finance and Industry
  • To decide on the authorization DGCCRF request the opinion of the AFSSA (Agence Française de Sécurité Sanitaire des Aliments) see the file
